New Place for Wyndham's Older Residents

01 May 2012

Tarneit Gardens Welcomes Woolworths

Leading Australian supermarket chain, Woolworths will be establishing a new store at Peet Limited’s Tarneit Gardens in the City of Wyndham, 25 kilometres west of Melbourne.

The retailer is purchasing the 5.08 hectare Neighbourhood Activity Centre site from Peet Limited, subject to planning approvals, which are currently underway.

It’s anticipated the Centre, including the Woolworths store and other specialty shops could open within 18-24 months.

The neighbourhood centre site is bordered by the deviation of Tarneit Road to the west, Ankuri Road to the south and Penrose Promenade to the east.  It will serve the immediate community of more than 1,000 households at Tarneit Gardens and contribute to the retail offering for the wider City of Wyndham population which is growing at an average annual rate of 5.4% and is expected to reach more than 200,000 by 2016.

Peet Limited Managing Director and CEO Brendan Gore welcomed Woolworth’s commitment to Tarneit saying the sale of the site was a significant milestone in the development of the popular community.

“We’re very pleased to see a quality retailer like Woolworths recognise the value of investing in our Tarneit Gardens community and we look forward to seeing their plans for the site take shape.”

Plans are also underway for the Tarneit Gardens Community Centre, expected to feature maternal and child health services, a kindergarten, community meeting facilities, space for programs specifically targeted at older people and offices for Wyndham City’s Aged and Disability Services Department.

The Master Plan for a sports reserve on the corner of Penrose Promenade and Goddard Streets has also been adopted by Council and includes two senior-sized Australian Rules football and cricket ovals, a pavilion, barbeque area, playground and parklands.

In total, Tarneit Gardens includes more than 15-hectares of open space including established parklands and the community’s signature 4.9 hectare Camelot Park.
Camelot Park opened in 2008 and features pedestrian and cycling paths, play equipment, picnic and barbeque facilities, along with a basketball half-court and multi-purpose football goals with soccer crossbar.

Access to Tarneit Gardens, and the retail site in particular, will be improved by the Tarneit Road deviation work which is currently underway.
